Ankle Brachial Index for Risk Assessment of Peripheral Arterial Disease among Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Preliminary Study
Song Hyo-Jeong

Abstract
The prevalence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is highly age-dependent. In addition, limb amputation, a frequent clinical complication of PAD, is common among individuals with diabetes. One diagnostic test, needed to detect peripheral arterial disease, atherosclerosis, is ankle brachial index (ABI), which is reliable and a valid technique. The purpose of this study was to identify ABI for risk assessment of PAD among community-dwelling older adults. This study was carried out from February to November in 2010. The subjects consisted of 92 elderly at the 6 Senior Centers located in two cities. The subjects, who consented to participating in the study, took ABI test using a multi vascular Doppler at the room allocated by the institutes. PAD was defined as an ABI ¡Â0.9 in either leg. The age of the participants ranged from 61 to 94. Of 92 participants, 13 (14.1%) had definite PAD. Results from the present study demonstrated a low prevalence of PAD among community-dwelling older adults.
